This morning I woke looking like a complete disaster. I'm just not one of those girls that rolls out of bed looking pretty...
(More my style)
This morning I literally stepped out of bed and into the car to drive my sister to work. I didn't care too about my appearance because the car was parked right out front. All was clear until a coffee craving hit. I haaaad to have Starbucks.
Now, do I go home and change, then go back to Starbucks? Orrr do I strut my disheveled hot-mess-of-a-self and lion hair? 0.22 seconds of debating later, I chose the lion. I kept thinking, if I was a celebrity and photographed I would end up in the back of the magazine under "What Were They Thinking?" or "Stars without makeup: Eeeeeek"!
What kind of gal/guy are you? Do you not leave the house without some prep work? Or do you embrace the train wreck look?

On another note, I was feeling generous when a nice homeless man asked me for money outside of Starbucks. Having only plastic on me, I purchased him a hot chocolate and spiced cake. I figured not all people like coffee (although I find them freaks, haha) and I wanted a food that he could save for later if he wanted. I walked out of the store and happily gave him the food explaining I didn't have money on me and what did he do??? He was pissed!
Ahhh well, I tried. What's your approach on giving money? I've lived in cities for the last 8 years so being asked for money is almost a daily occurrence. I really don't like giving money because of the fear it will be spent on alcohol/drugs and generally choose to give food. What do you think?

After being put in my place by the homeless man, I made a massive breakfast...
Berry Pecan Protein Pancake
1 scoop vanilla protein (I used SunWarrior brand)
1/3 cup egg whites
1/2 mashed banana
1/2 cup frozen berries (raspb, blue, blackberries)
1 t flax seeds
1 T crushed pecans
pinch baking powder
pinch cinnamon, nutmeg
1 T organic maple syrup

15 mins of digesting later, I hit the road for BodyPump class. The class was great per usual, but the lovely instructor decided to sing along to most of the already lame music. Thaaaaanks! <---sarcasm
On the way home I stopped at health food Heaven to for a ginormous protein-packed salad from Whole Foods. Mmmmm.
Spinach, arugula, steamed brussels/zucchini/summer squash, roasted turkey breast, raw veggies, 1 egg, sunflower seeds, garbanzo beans, topped with a little cayenne and sea salt. So so good!

Before I go, I wanted to show y'all some nutritional info from a popular brand of deli turkey. Browse the ingredient list if you will...
Barf. Seriously spend the extra $0.40 and buy the all-natural version.

Are you a hot mess in the morning? Do you own it?
What's your approach to giving money to the homeless?

I absolutely never give money outright to people who sit on the street and ask for it. Frankly, it's a nuisance and shouldn't be encouraged. Instead, I offer information on community resources that can help with things like food, shelter, clothing, jobs. Then I donate my money (when I have money to give) to those resources - like the food shelf and the local homeless shelters.
ReplyDeleteAll natural deli meats are definitely better. I can't eat the "fake" stuff anyway because all the nitrites and fillers gives me a migraine. That should show how bad they are.
ReplyDeletei never leave the house with makeup. but i like to think that i look good once i'm dressed. maybe i'm just deluding myself
ReplyDeleteI have lived in a small town most of my life so I'm kinda weirded-out/scared when I'm asked for money. But I would totally give that person food or a drink (non-alcoholic) over money! How rude that that guy wasn't thankful to you-I would have ate that meal right in front of him!
ReplyDeleteOh, and I'm a hot mess! When you have short hair, you can't just pull it back in a pony. It just goes EVERYWHERE! I don't care though....most people have seen me prettied-up so I just hope they remember that, and not me out of bed!
first of all I'm generally a hot mess all of the time. My lack of a "real" job leaves me wearing yoga pants and crazy ponytails 24/7. I love it.
ReplyDeleteGenerally I am a big believer in giving food instead of money. Anyone who is unappreciative was definitely going to use the money on something they shouldn't be.
"Hot mess" is my standard look. Luckily, I've figured out that if the baby is dressed well, no one looks at me :)
ReplyDeleteI usually give money (or my time in the form of working at soup kitchens, etc), but homeless people are generally insane (at the worst) or cranky (at the best) so I wouldn't take it personally. I least, I never took it personally when a homeless woman in Georgetown used to scream "Jesus doesn't love whores!" every time I walked by :)
Hey, if you wake up looking like Beyonce, then you look a helluva lot better than I do in the mornings! :P
ReplyDeleteMeh I often leave the house with no make-up or with unbrushed hair. I'm very lazy!!
I NEVER give money to the homeless! You never know what they'll spend it on! Food is the way to go, and from the sounds of it this guy would not have spent any money you gave him wisely anyway!
i definitely rock the 'step out of the shower and get out the door' look wehenver possible, with little shame.. unless i think i'm going to run into a potential husband (haha joking... kind of)
ReplyDeletei ALWAYS offer food and beverage but never money to the homeless. sometimes they're grateful, sometimes they're not... you win some, you lose some
Mostly I leave the house with my gym clothes on. I only wear eye liner and sometimes mascara so I always have the eyeliner on. and my hair in a pony. So I guess I'm a hot mess.
ReplyDeleteThe homeless thing is tricky. I don't like to give them $$ either because of the drug thing.
Most of the time, I'll leave home to run errands as a hot mess! Haha! It just takes too much time to get ready in the morning when you only have a couple small things to get done. I used to give money to the homeless all the time, until one day, I had an extra sandwich in my car. I didn't want to eat it for lunch, and the homeless man turned it down and said he wanted money. Now I look the other way when I see them coming toward me!
ReplyDeleteI have been becoming more of a slacker on the morning preparations and this slightly scares me...but I usually put a little bit of effort in. As for the giving of money thing, I think it depends..like for instance what you did was so awesome and should have been appreciated. This one time I had a bag of trail mix in my car that my mom gave me incase I got stranded in the winter (i live in Canada) and I stopped at a street light and gave it to a lady and she just devoured the whole thing before my light turned green. But then sometimes I just see someone that looks sooo sad and down on their luck and so I give them a little bit of money...It really doesn't solve any problems but maybe it will help them get through that day and have a ripple effect...
ReplyDeleteI have stick straight hair, so I'm pretty lucky in the sense that it doesnt get too crazy. I totally go out of the house with no makeup on and my hair in a pony tail all the time.
ReplyDeleteWhen I lived in the city I rarely gave the homeless money for the same reason that you dont. I would much rather give food as well...
I had the same exact experience with a homeless man in college. He was pissed about the hot chocolate, so I took it back! Teach him to mess with me. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't own any make-up, so I guess you could say I never leave the house WITH make-up on!
Geez, I would be PUMPED if someone brought me a hot chocolate and piece of cake! I think you did the right thing, and I feel the same way.
ReplyDeleteI love leaving the house without makeup! Especially after a run and a shower, I feel all glowy :)
I used to give food, but then someone pointed out to me that in a way, it's a little demeaning. Being on the streets is dehumanizing in almost every way imaginable, giving someone food because you don't "trust" them to do what they need to do for themselves at that moment maybe contributes to that. It is kind of comparable to treating them like a child.
ReplyDeleteJust my thoughts which are different than others. I think we often fail to really think about the experience of being homeless and how complicated, dehumanizing, embarrassing, and painful it really is...
Oh gosh, I am a total hot mess in the morning! haha I try to avoid going in places--but I'll totally embrace the lion to go through the Starbucks drive-thru! Caffeine trumps vanity. :)
ReplyDeleteI always leave the house without makeup of brushing my hair. That's what 7 years of all-girls' school will do to you, haha.
ReplyDeleteI've had that happen to me too- bought homeless people something and have them refuse it. I don't know if it's pride preventing them from wanting it, or the fact that they're not after food in the first place...either way, it's generally the only thing I'll give, because you have no way of knowing where cash is going, like you said.
oh I leave looking like a hot mess too alot, lol! I actually used to care when I lived back where Im from , but since moving away and knowing nobody, I dont care who sees me, lol!
ReplyDeleteomg about the homeless guy, I bet he wanted money instead because he wanted to buy booze , lol
Love ya girl! xoxo
You better believe I OWN my hot mess-ness in the morning! Haha...Beauty sleep? I don't think so! I definitely don't wake up beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI never give money on the streets, but will often buy something for someone, just like you did. I've received similar negative responses in Georgetown...I guess the best thing to do is ask beforehand?
Can't wait for Saturday! xoxo
I have never given money when asked on the street, but I do give money and time to organizations in DC which support and help the homeless such as Miriam's Kitchen and DC Central Kitchen. Look into them - they are amazing and are focused on local and sustainable foods, health & nutrition, job training, etc.
ReplyDeleteThrough volunteering with those orgs, I've learned that the most important and respectful thing you can do when faced with homeless individuals is to always acknowledge them. I try to make eye contact and say hello, good morning, etc. If they ask for money, I just say, sorry, not today.
I am a total hot mess when I am out walking my dog in the morning and at night! Pajama pants, not makeup, etc. But I do always brush my teeth before stepping outside, even if its just to let the dog out!
I once gave a homeless man a granola bar outside of one of the museums on the mall and he spit on it! I guess we know what they're really after...
ReplyDeleteThis made me laugh out loud. I definitely embrace the lion -- sometimes you just gotta!
