Nine Eleven

Happy (almost) last weekend of summer! It's absolutely California-beautiful weather here in DC. Bright sun, cool breeze, and zero humidity.

As you're all well aware today is a significant day in our nation's history. I bet each and every one if you can remember where you were when the Twin Towers fell. I was a junior in high school and our computer teacher ran to the TV so we could all figure out what was going on. I remember thinking I was dreaming or watching a movie.

Today is a day to remember those that lost their lives and insure we keep their memories alive and in our hearts forever.

I woke feeling different, knowing what day it was. Something told me to go for a run and be among those walking around Washington, DC, paying their respects.

Here are some images from my 6-mile run:

Half-mast flags around Washington Monument

Washington Monument

Standing at Lincoln Monument facing Washington

Pond adjacent to Vietnam Veterans Memorial

Potomac river facing Georgetown waterfront and Watergate

Never forgotten. 9/11/2001.

A little weekend rewind..

Friday evening a bunch of friends and I headed to the last Jazz in the Sculpture Garden of the season. Here are pics from the last one we went to. Every Friday (from Memorial day to labor day), there is a free jazz concert in the Smithsonian Sculpture Garden where people bring blankets, wine, and food. It's amazing, and definitely one of my favorite DC events.

This morning post-run, I quenched my hunger with a Banana-Coconut Green Smoothie:

1 scoop vanilla protein, 1 frozen banana, heaping hand full fresh spinach, 1 tbsp red. fat unsweetened coconut, 1 cup almond milk, ice, 1/2 tsp xanthan gum (to thicken), stevia, pinch sea salt (to bring out sweetness), splash fresh OJ

The rest of the day was spend tackling a laundry mountain, walking the pup, and reading in the sunshine. Perfect Saturday if you ask me.

For lunch I whipped up a delicious hummus salad:

Mixed greens, diced tofu, cherry tomatoes, shelled edamame, mushrooms, fresh cilantro, S&P, Trader Joe's Jalapeno and cilantro hummus

Tip: Hummus used as salad dressing is a fantastic spin on a traditional salad

And in lieu of the nice cool weather, I enjoyed English breakfast tea and dark chocolate on the deck....

Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Lauren

  1. If I am ever in the area (or you come to Iowa or MN) we'll have to hang out. I read your posts and I just can't believe how similar our tastes are...right down to the hummus salads and tea.

  2. Just out of curiosity... what kind of camera do you carry with you on your runs? I'm still figuring out how to balance my keys, ID, and anything else I may want to have with me (cell phone, mp3 player, etc) during my runs. Haven't figured out how to carry a camera yet, but I've seen plenty of "photo-worthy" images!
