Get a clue

Helloooo,

How are ya? Pretty stoked it's almost Friday ova hurrr. The weather has been absolutely GORG so I'm looking to spend a little less time in my air conditioned lab and more time in the SUN (with spf of course)!

Speaking of sun, there was an interesting article posted in the National Cancer Institutes recent bulletin. For anyone interesed in cancer research but doesn't necessarily have a strong science background, this bulletin is great. And for those with a science background it's equally great because you can keep up-to-date with cancer research advances in a single manuscript. And the primary papers are always linked through the article.

I know you may be striving to look like Donatella:

Source

But please consider some excerpts from the article:

Did you know that "melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer, increased among Caucasian women in the United States aged 15 to 39 by 50 percent between 1980 and 2004"????

"First exposure to sunbeds before 35 years of age significantly increased the risk of melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma showed an increased risk"

The evidence does not support a protective effect of the use of sunbeds against damage to the skin from subsequent sun exposure. Young adults should be discouraged from using indoor tanning equipment and restricted access to sunbeds by minors should be strongly considered. Source

^AKA It is NOT BETTER to go tanning before a vacation to get a "base tan"

Consider the 10% tax on indoor tanning signed by President Obama as part of the health care reform bill. Tanning is taxed so we can use that money to pay for your SKIN CANCER BILLS!!!! Seriously, take a hint!!!

And if that doesn't scare you, did you know that the survival rate is 5-10% once the cancer spreads???!

Please consider investing in some tan from a can!!! It will save your life and prevent you from looking like a leather bag! ;-)

OK, enough rant..

This morning I woke up and took the pup for a walk. Had to snap a pic because he was lookin extra cute:

After our lovely time together I headed out for a 5-mile run. Not gonna lie, it wasn't the most pleasant run.

Perdy, yes:

Perdy painful, umm yup.

Miles 1-3 felt fine. Then I hit a wall. Not sure why (maybe not enough water???). So I took the last 2 miles easy peasy. I used to get all kinds of pissed off if I had a not so stellar run, but lately I've come to realize that the "bad" runs (even though the ability TO run should be good enough in itself) make the really great runs, that much better.

Shortly after returning I made a protein smoothie both me and the Manfriend:

^Adapted from Kristen's recipe: 1 cup frozen cherries, 1 scoop chocolate whey protein, 1 tsp flax seed oil, 1 tsp cocoa powder, almond milk

I've been craving chia oats during lunch lately so I made these to bring to Experimentland:

^1/4 oats, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 scoop Vanilla protein powder, 1/8 cup nuked frozen berries, stevia, dash sea salt. YUM!

Well I've gotta get back to my experiment. Fingers crossed for some positive results!!

QUESTION: Are there any habits/activities people do that are completely uncomprehendable to you and literally drive you up a wall??? LOL For me, it's tanning beds!!!

Have a good night!!!

-Lauren

  1. Not really related to health per se but people chewing with their mouths open drives me up the wall. Has no one (in their family or a good friend) seriously told them how disgusting it sounds or how rude it is!?

Health related, I don't understand smoking cigs. Obv they get addicted but I don't really know WHY do it in the first place. My mom smokes and I think it's her stress relief but it's incomprehensible to me with the health effects it could cause for an instant of stress relief.

  2. Not only do I NOT want to look like Donatella in every way possible, I don't want to get skin cancer, which is why I wear sunscreen every day, even if it's cloudy. Thanks for the link!

I'm sorry to hear about your running wall :( That happens to me sometimes, too, and I can never find a pattern to it. You have such a good outlook on disappointing runs, though!

Tanning beds drive me nuts, too. Gah, why do people subject themselves to a KNOWN carcinogenic source?? I don't get it!!

  3. For me, it's smoking. I don't get why people smoke. I understand it being hard to quit due to the addiction...but I really don't get why people start in the first place because it's common knowledge how bad it is. And expensive!

I am big on sun protection too. I have had to have 8 moles removed and am now very cautious of being in the sun and caring for my skin.

  4. a) No melanoma here, but as a chicky who has had SEVERAL basal cell cancer spots removed already before even graduating from high school, I say THANK YOU for highlighting that article!!

    b) Your dog is a.dorable.

    c) That lake shot with the weeping willow looks EXACTLY like a tree overlooking the lake here!! I seriously had to look at it like 5 times to convince myself that it wasn't the same. Lookin' loveeely!

  5. I'll admit, I used to tan in high school before formals and proms. My best friend and I went in secret without telling our moms, then one day my friend went in to a high exposure booth for 10 minutes and came out FRIED. Her mom went ballistic and called my mom, and let's just say that was the end of that. Since then, I'm still not great about covering up in the sun (come on...I'll wear SPF 30, but I'm not going to wear shorts, a tshirt and a wide brimmed hat when everyone else is lounging around in their string bikinis), but I'm trying to be cautious.

One habit that I don't get...SMOKING!! One of my best friends does, and I have to say that it's a serious wall in our relationship. She just doesn't get why I have a problem with the fact that she's smoking herself to death!!

Great topic!! Hope you enjoy your Friday off!

  6. I used to tanning beds when I was senior in high school, but I get dark fast and I got to the point where I was too dark (even though I wasn't going religiously) and then in summertime I play tons of sand vb and lifeguard, and I don't enjoy being too dark. SO now I just let the natural sunlight tan me, but not without SPF 70 H2O proof, Sweat Proof, and reapplying it every hour almost. And guess waht? I still get tan, but the color is just prettier :-)

ps Donatelli looks awful, not to be rude but.....

  7. Thank you SO MUCH for your comment girl! I listened to the song and it made me cry, but in a good way :) It has a really good point and things that I need to remember. I will be listening to it over and over and over now.. haha but thank you!!!

Ah tanning beds.. they get on my nerves too. Skin cancer is serious but I think most people don't really think that it could happen to them, you know? I love my self-tanner :)

I also don't understand smoking.. it is so nasty, blech.

Love you! Have a fabulous weekend!

  8. I puked in my mouth a little seeing that picture of Donatella the beginning of your post. I never understood those people that went for a "base tan", pretty absurd. As a runner there is always this balancing act with vitamin D and sun exposure. Use your common sense, that is what I always fall back on.

  9. you're right - your pup has been lookin' extra cute! :)

also, melanoma runs in my family, so i gotta keep this pasty skin under some tight SPF-watch!

  10. Ah, don't hate me. I worked at a tanning salon up until I graduated from college. I don't tan anymore and wear SPF every single day.

I am completely peeved off by smoking! I don't really have a problem with people's unhealthy habits, because it is their body, their choice. But you start smoking around me and you are hurting my body when I choose to be healthy.

  12. Thanks for expose on tanning beds! I used to tan ALL THE TIME. But now I'm done with it! I don't ever wanna look like that when I'm old and for sure don't wanna even think about getting cancer! So scary!! I will stick to my tan in a can :)

  13. This is random, but I live in a pretty busy neighborhood in San Francisco. There are some major thoroughfares that cut through the 'hood and at 2 intersections, there are No Pedestrian Crossing Signs. HUGE signs, to tell you not to cross this side, but go to the other side. It's slightly inconvenient and perhaps it's a little too car-centric (I'd prefer a pedestrian-centric attitude, but this is what we have), but I don't get why people try to out run cars at these intersections. I see it ALL THE TIME! And it drives me nuts. Seriously, some of these people are driving 40 MPH, you CAN'T OUT RUN THEM! Okay, end rant ;)
