Soda and pancreatic cancer

A very interesting and informative article was just published in the American Association for Cancer Research (Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention) linking soft drinks, only 2 per week (!) to pancreatic cancer, among the most fatal forms of cancer.

From the article:

Carcinoma of the pancreas is a serious medical and public health problem because of the late presentation of symptoms, high metastatic potential, inadequate therapeutic choices, and lack of primary prevention strategy. Pancreatic cancer is among the most rapidly fatal cancers in adults, with a 5-year survival rate of <5%

The hypothesized mechanism linking type 2 diabetes mellitus or abnormal glucose metabolism to pancreatic cancer involves insulin. Chronically elevated glucose concentrations are directly associated with reduced insulin sensitivity. Hyperinsulinemia, a result of insulinin sensitivity, has been shown to increase local circulation and cell division (i.e. cancer) within the pancreas.

^^This means very high levels of glucose cause one to become insensitive to insulin, so sugar can not be efficiently transported into cells from the blood. The pancreatic cells to compensate increase cell division (this is the definition of cancer) to produce more insulin, etc. etc.

Soft drinks are the leading sources of added sugar in the U.S. diet

There was no association between consumption of juice and risk of pancreatic cancer

No time better than the present to give up soda or "pop" as many of you call it ;-)

  1. I'm a diet soda addict, so while I'm glad I'm not getting all that sugar, I know it's still a horrible habit! Thanks for the info!

  2. That fits well into the documentary I watched on Obesity on netflix today. I used to be a little diet soda addict. I never drank it before college and in college it was like crack to me. But, once I started to pay for it on my own I quit the addiction and now it is occasional.

  3. I'm in the same boat as S Enman...I gave up diet pop (yup, I'm one of those) after reading Skinny Bitch -- oddly, it was the only thing Skinny Bitch got me to give up -- and I haven't missed it at all. I love me some club soda with lemon and lime, chemical free!

  4. I haven't drank soda in what feels like years! And I try my very hardest not to eat sugar substitutes--or any other chemicals for that matter.

but i understand the convenience of it all.. its just that our bodies weren't made to process such chemicals.

anyways hope youre doing well, sleep tight

  6. @findinghappinessandhealth No, it's referring to high fructose corn syrup that's found in non-diet sodas. However, there is evidence that aspartame (found in diet coke) can cause cancer.
