So a few weeks ago I posted an experiment where I separated white blood cells from a donor that had an extremely fatty meal before donating. Today I did a similar experiment only the donor did not consume Micky D's before giving blood. Check out the difference.
Normal plasma (translucent upper layer):

Fatty plasma (VERY cloudy):

Wowza. I am still baffled by this!!

Ew. but cool experiment!
ReplyDeleteRegardless, I will still eat my McDs. It'll be the occasional "treat"! ;-)
wow- what a cool experiment!!
ReplyDelete@sophia I had a vanilla cone last weekend :P
ReplyDelete@findinghappinessandhealth Thanks! The purpose of the experiment wasn't even to look at fat cells, just a neat observation :)
ReplyDeleteCool - I am so glad to have something to compare it to! Thank you for posting this!

That is so gross. But definitely something that we ALL need to see.
ReplyDeleteMaybe not, but just for me, I would love to see a comparison between a fatty meal containing animal products and a vegan meal of the same fat content. I really am interested in research comparing the two. Sweet observation, by the way.
ReplyDeletegave blood 12/20/10 . i did the double with machine that seperates plasma from platlets mine looked cloudy. kinda scary ,but did have a double steak hogie before going . had oatmeal in the morning.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly and along the same lines, the American Red Cross states the following in their recommendations for donating blood:
ReplyDelete"Eat a healthy meal before your donation. Avoid fatty foods, such as hamburgers, fries or ice cream before donating. Tests for infections done on all donated blood can be affected by fats that appear in your blood for several hours after eating fatty foods."
